How this Energy Group Rightsized to Firmspace Denver

Denver Firmspace member Ryan Nygard is the US Sales Manager for the Intervention and Stimulation Equipment Aftermarket team at National Oilwell Varco (NOV).

NOV is a global operator in the oil and gas sector that has roots over 150 years old and nearly 40,000 employees around the world. When Ryan joined NOV in 2008, he worked out of a downtown office space where the group leased an entire floor.

At that time, Ryan was responsible for managing vendor relationships – and the inevitable issues that come along with them – which limited the time he could spend building key relationships with prospects.

Today, Ryan works out of Firmspace Denver, where none of this operational noise reaches his desk. Here’s why his group of 11 decided to downsize to a proworking space.

The Challenge: After the Market Downturn, Their Smaller Team Needed a Smaller Downtown Office Space

When the market downturn hit NOV in 2020, their Denver group downsized dramatically, and the reduced team found themselves in need of a downtown office location that would require less overhead than it would take to build-out and manage a new office space on their own. And they were ready to move to a better location.

Ryan had been responsible for many of the details of office life in the old space, but after he became the sole member of his team within the Denver NOV group, he didn’t have the bandwidth to continue these activities.

And while NOV has a flexible work policy, shifting to working from home full-time wasn’t a great option. Like many, Ryan has kids, so as he said, “Home just isn’t a place where I can get work done.”

The group needed a new managed office space that would give them privacy and limit distractions.

Solution: Downsize to a Professional Coworking Space

NOV’s Denver group knew that their new limitations presented a great opportunity.

Managed office spaces and professional coworking spaces that would have been impractical for a staff of several hundred were now the right fit for the group’s budget and their needs.

They toured a few downtown office spaces, but Firmspace Denver quickly emerged as the right choice because it checked all of the boxes on their wishlist:

  • Fits within their budget

  • A premium downtown location

  • High-quality, furnished offices for every team member

  • Conference rooms with tech in place for meetings

  • All amenities and utilities included – no worries about whether there is toner for the shared printer or coffee beans for the morning carafe

  • Exceptional support staff on-site that don’t require management from the NOV team

And everyone on their team works in an office that has its own window with a view. Perhaps best of all, they didn’t have to wait for a build-out to move in, which made their quick transition to a new space even smoother.

Results: Firmspace Denver Provides a Place to Work without Distractions

Ryan’s team loves their Firmspace experience, and this isn’t just because it’s a well-appointed office space where everyone can open or close their soundproof doors at will.

“The biggest thing is the staff,” Ryan said. “They’re super helpful and accommodating, and they make the workdays go smoothly.”

It’s also a place where Ryan doesn’t have to worry about the daily details of running an office, and it comes with significant cost savings:

In addition to eliminating the hassle of managing utilities providers and coordinating coffee supply deliveries, Firmspace costs 30 percent of the bill NOV Denver faced at the beginning of each month at their former office space.

Today, the team is hoping to add two or three more employees to their Denver group, and Ryan hopes that the Firmspace offices will be a good incentive in the recruitment process.
